FAQ

What is Giving Day?

Giving Day is a fun 24-hour online fundraising drive to support UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, and campus programs. Project teams raise money for their favorite programs by connecting with supporters and inspiring them to become donors.

When is Giving Day?

Our next Giving Day is February 27, 2019. Donations made between 12:01 a.m. and midnight count toward Giving Day.

How are gifts made?

Donors give through a special Giving Day website, givingday.ucsc.edu. The site keeps track of gifts in real time so everyone can see right away how each project is doing as they compete for matches and challenges.

What are “matches”?

Matches, created by donors for favorite projects, create an incentive for others to give. When someone makes a gift, the donor matches it 1:1 up to the stated amount. For example, when you make a gift of $100 to a project with a match fund of $1,000, an additional $100 will go to the project. That continues until the full amount of the match has been reached.

Want to create a Matching Fund? We’d love to hear from you. Contact Hanna Mengo at hmengo@ucsc.edu or make your gift here.

What are “challenges”?

Challenges, also funded by donors, create fun competition between project teams. The project that has the most unique donors in a specified time period is awarded bonus dollars. For example, the project with the most gifts from noon to 1 p.m. might win a $1,000 bonus, or from 5 p.m.  to 7 p.m. a $5,000 bonus.

Want to contribute to the Challenge Fund?  We’d love to hear from you. Contact Howard Heevner at hheevner@ucsc.edu or make your challenge gift here.

What types of programs are featured?

All kinds of things that are connected to UC Santa Cruz, including sports teams, science competitions, and research projects. Project teams can be led by students, staff, or faculty. Each team creates a project around the things they care about that will benefit from crowdfunding.  Each team then works to inspire its current supporters and new ones to give to the project.

Cash donations

We will have a pop-up event on campus at the Quarry where cash donations will be accepted from 10 AM to 3 PM. Only online gifts will count towards challenges.

Is there a minimum gift?
The minimum online gift is $9. We can accept smaller gifts at the Quarry from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Giving Day (Feb 27).
